How to Level Up Your Jiu-Jitsu Game: Expert Tips from Gordon Ryan and Garry Tonon

In the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), mastering key habits can significantly elevate your game. In a recent instructional video, BJJ icons Gordon Ryan and Garry Tonon shared valuable insights into building effective habits for both passing guard and guard retention.

Gordon Ryan emphasized the importance of positioning to prevent opponents from entangling legs when passing guard. He stressed the need to avoid aligning centerlines with the opponent and instead move to a flanking position. By doing so, the opponent finds it challenging to establish a leg connection, enabling the practitioner to apply pressure and initiate passes effectively.

On the other hand, Garry Tonon focused on late-stage guard retention techniques. He highlighted a scenario where the opponent successfully flanks and moves to close the distance. In such situations, Garry demonstrated a technique where he posts on the opponent's shoulders, allowing him to tuck and roll, minimizing back exposure. This technique enables him to recover guard or transition to a wrestling position, maintaining control and readiness to counter-attack.

Both instructors emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities to attack while maintaining defensive positions. Garry mentioned the possibility of throwing up triangles during guard retention, while Gordon highlighted the potential for launching double legs from the knees when the opponent is in an elevated position.
