Today marks the 10th anniversary of The Jiu-Jitsu Foundry. Over the years, we’ve stayed true to what matters most: building skills, supporting each other, and pushing through adversity on and off the mats.
We know the hardest challenges aren’t always about a tight triangle or a tough roll—sometimes life throws obstacles our way: losing a job, dealing with a family crisis, or unexpected financial stress. When this happens, paying for your membership can feel overwhelming. What do we do when a dedicated member genuinely can’t afford to train?
So our answer has been straightforward: We don't let committed members walk away because of temporary financial hardship. We work something out. We always have.
Today, on our 10th anniversary, we wanted to say that out loud.
More Than a Business: Forged in Community
Our mission is to spread the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu across Malaysia. We believe it can change lives. A student who has been with us for months or years is more than just a paying member; they are an important part of what we are building.
You are the training partner who helps a new white belt feel the spark. You are the familiar face that makes our gym a second home. Losing you isn't just a loss for our business; it's like losing a crucial element in the alloy we are forging together. Our community is weaker without you.
Because of this, we believe in helping our own. If you are a dedicated student facing genuine, temporary hardship, we will not turn you away.
The Balance: Generosity vs. Sustainability
While our heart is with our community, we also have a responsibility to keep the furnaces hot and the doors open. We must maintain the facility and ensure The Jiu-Jitsu Foundry can serve everyone for years to come. An open-ended "free training" policy isn't sustainable, and, frankly, it can be taken advantage of, which is unfair to the members whose fees keep our community thriving.
So, how do we achieve the balance? We do it through a system built on two of BJJ's core principles: respect and reciprocity.
It’s not a secret deal; it’s a structured, dignified, and temporary arrangement.
Here’s how it works:
Communication is Your First Move: The most important step is to talk to us—privately and honestly. Don't just disappear. Ghosting your membership helps no one. These conversations are always 100% confidential and handled with the respect you deserve.
A Bridge, Not a Destination: It is designed as a temporary bridge to get you through a rough patch (e.g., 1-3 months). We'll agree on a timeframe and check in at the end of it to see how things are going.
Pay It Forward with Value: While you may not be able to contribute financially, you can still provide immense value. In exchange for a paused membership, we might ask you to help forge our community in other ways:
Help Temper New Students: Be a dedicated partner for trial classes or new white belts, helping them learn the fundamentals.
Help Stoke the Fires: Assist with cleaning the mats, manning the front desk for an hour a week, or helping set up for events.
Become a Mentor: Take a junior student under your wing, offering guidance and support.
This "Pay It Forward" model maintains your dignity and your active role within The Jiu-Jitsu Foundry. You are earning your place on the mats through a different kind of currency—your time, your knowledge, and your commitment. This ensures that those who truly value our community will embrace the opportunity while deterring anyone who is simply looking for a free ride.
Our Promise to You
We strive to be a community first and a business second. We invest in people who have invested their time and spirit in us.
If you are ever in a position where life has you tapping, don't stay down. Signal to us, take a breath, and let's work on a game plan. The mats at The Jiu-Jitsu Foundry will always be here for those who respect the art, the gym, and the community we are all forging together.
See you on the mats.
